That fledgling parliament was held by Henry III in Leicester Castle, much of which is now in ruins although the Church of St Mary de Castro, the great hall and castle gardens remain as popular visitor attractions. The other great city monument is the Cathedral and it contains the tomb of Richard III, if not the actual remains, which as legend goes were cast into the River Soar under the orders of Henry VII. These notable royal connections extend to literary figures too and the William Shakespeare tale of King Lear was inspired by the cities royal legends. It is said that the bard himself appeared at the Leicester Guild Hall, a superb Grade I listed timber-framed building which still hosts regular musical and theatre productions.

The mix of old and new which so defines the city is most evident in the architecture and it is not unusual to find incredible ancient and modern buildings side by side. If the Guildhall is a fine example of the ancient then the title of best modern building goes to the National Space Centre, one of the leading attractions in the country and an example of the city's highly regarded academic status and commitment to modern technology industries. A description of old and new can also be used to define many of the Leicester accommodation options and in particular some of the grand old luxury hotels.

In such illustrious establishments the broad appeal is certainly the terrific history which is so evident in the stately suites and public spaces which are often bedecked in period style furniture and decor. Where the new comes in is in providing all the technologies and hospitality for the modern world. For some this will mean luxurious event spaces for a stylish wedding or corporate event and for others it will be business centres with access to office equipment and services, and guest rooms with broadband internet and work spaces. Additional modern features of such luxury Leicester accommodation will include satellite television and climate control and often leisure facilities such as fitness suites with the latest exercise machines.

Superb dining is a feature which remains constant and most hotels will have first class restaurants and lounge spaces. For those staying in other Leicester accommodation options such as the countless bed and breakfast guest houses there is sure to be an excellent restaurant nearby. Food is something the city does very well indeed and with such a diverse cultural make-up there are cuisines from all over the world on the doorstep. The multicultural aspects extend to shopping too and the city contains one of the largest undercover markets in Europe. All the best aspects of such worldwide influences come together on Melton Road where the shops, dining outlets and all manner of cultural expression come to life.

Whatever the criteria for choosing Leicester accommodation, whether by budget, facilities, style or location, one thing which shines through is the warm hospitality which has helped define one of the world's truly great cities.
